It has provided entertainment and controversy since it began in 2001, but it now looks certain that Network Ten has finally given the axe to reality television series Big Brother.
Although there have previously been calls for the axing of the show by numerous personalities - including former Prime Minister John Howard - several sources stated that the show, currently in its 9th series, will be cancelled at the end of this series.
Big Brother in Australia has been known for causing controversy, including allegations in the 2006 series that two male housemates sexually assaulted a female housemate which was apparently seen on the "live internet feed". This caused outrage across the country and politicians such as former Prime Minister John Howard and then-Opposition Leader Kim Beazley criticised Network Ten for not pulling the show.
Big Brother also caused more public anger with it's Uncut episodes, which involved sexual discussions and coarse language. Network Ten had also, at times, breached ACMA codes when a housemate was receiving a massage with his genitals exposed. Eventually the name was changed to Adults Only and then was finally axed. Big Brother 2008 is the latest to be scrutinised by the public, which is currently hosted by radio presenters Kyle and Jackie O.
The Ten Network is yet to make an official press statement, but comedian Rove McManus had backed up the sources, stating that the show was definitely axed.
