  • Access 31 has closed down

    August 6 2008 6:39pm (UTC+8)  -  Article by Kevin

Access 31, Western Australia's only community television station, has officially been closed down.

Access 31 recently suffered severe financial problems which almost forced the station to close down in June. This was temporarily avoided by a generous donation of $500,000 by a private party and a $250,000 grant from Lotterywest.

I just can't get over how suddenly this happened.

Why in the world would someone promise to give the station money, and then change their mind? :helpsmilie:

It was a local businessman wasn't it? I remember reading something about it.

More importantly though was that it was only a few weeks ago that the Federal Government had committed to a digital future for Access 31. Whether that means it's off-air until then or another aspirant group starts up is anyone's guess.

CTV were always on about how hard done they were that they didn't get the licence and how much they deserved to get it so maybe they will try to resurect the station.

Happy for alternative television but not if its only going to serve the purposes of a few nasty contrived individuals with an agenda to push more of this mainstream left field gender politics out in to the world. We've got enough of that already in our various other media!

And some of those arts programs esp the ones concerned with Perth arts, were essentially for a few very insular and tightly knitted small-minded and even vindictive Perth personality types in order to get their somewhat limited and very self-serving little points of view across. I thought.

Liked some of the old movies they occasionly had on though. Pity.

it seems you have a very narrow perseption of Access 31. I say this because almost everyone did not like Access 31 for one thing or another, and this gave them sufficient reason to never watch it again, hence the stigma, hence the reducing audience, hence the shutdown.

It is a shame that it has gone....but the ship has not been decommissioned yet.

I googled here to find this information, after I turned on Channel 31 and found nothing, and found its website down as well. Thanks for the information, or I'd still be wondering what had happened (the program guide is still appearing). I'm sorry for those who have lost their jobs.
