Network Ten has announced plans to launch a 24-hour sports channel in the second quarter of 2009.
The channel, to be known simply as ONE, will be broadcast free-to-air and in high definition.
Network Ten CEO Grant Blackley said ONE's all-sports lineup will appeal to Australians' shared passion for sport and ensure that Ten continues to build a new and more diverse audience. Ten says it owns the rights to show Australian swimming, US NBA basketball, US Major League baseball, US Open golf and US Masters golf.
Ten also owns the rights to IPL Cricket and all Formula One Grand Prix events and will also broadcast AFL games next season as well as the Trans-Tasman Netball League.
In addition to live sport the channel will also broadcast 2 nightly editions of Sports Tonight in primetime and a Monday night match review style program hosted by Melbourne sports presenter Stephen Quartermain.
The channel is expected to help drive an increase in the take-up of free-to-air digital television in Australia and will provide a free alternative to subscription sports services such as FOX SPORTS and ESPN.
ONE will also broadcast on Ten's second standard definition channel.
