News Limited has announced it will start consolidating the "feature" sections in its nine weekday and Sunday newspapers.
The features involved include the travel, personal finance, television, food and health and lifestyle sections in all News Limited metropolitan newspapers. The company claims this will "present a more uniform national offering across the mastheads and online".
Features director Alan Oakley told The Australian that the change is about improving quality, not saving money, but said it was likely to result in job losses.
"Like every newspaper group in the world, people are looking to do things more efficiently and smarter", he said.
Readers should start to see changes towards the middle of the year.
"The idea is to have a better, more consistent offering that lives seven days a week as opposed to one day a week. There's a lot of potential in aligning things a lot more, having things happening on the same day and having genuinely integrated, vertical brands that are national", Oakley said.
Although the features will be centralised in Sydney, Oakley says that "content would remain local".
"There will be a central team based in Sydney to provide co-ordination. But writers can be located anywhere", he said.
