  IN BRIEF | After six years of co-hosting Australian Idol, James Mathison has quit saying he needs anonymity and a more relaxed lifestyle.
  
  Mathison says that a part of him struggled to be "that guy from that thing" and taking a step back will allow him to do what he wants, without the scrutiny that comes with being on television.
  
  "For six years Australian Idol has been my life. You really don't have time to do anything else. I might not have been the greatest friend to people because I had no time so it would be cool to change that."
  
  "I had to follow my gut and I wanted new challenges", he said.
  
  Mathison is currently in New York where he plans to explore some music opportunities.
