  • Ten drops The Simpsons for more news

    April 27 2009 7:28am (UTC+8)  -  Article by Kevin

UPDATED | Network Ten says it will drop The Simpsons and replace it with an extended Ten News bulletin in an effort to save money.

The network apparently can no longer afford to pay the high fee for each episode of The Simpsons and says dropping the show will save $6 million a year.

As much as I love The Simpsons we've all seen those 6pm repeats so many times now! A solid 90 minutes of news from 5pm is a good move IMO.

I like the idea in theory, but I'm not convinced the average Australian viewer wants 90 minutes of news... especially on Ten. It will be interesting to see if this does work for them.

Ten dropping The Simpsons completely though was a surprise to me.

They're not dropping The Simpsons completely. They're airing the first series in widescreen from this week. They're just ditching the old re-runs. Also, I don't expect people will watch the full 90 minutes of Ten News. I'd expect the 6pm bulletin to be a summary of the top news, sport and weather from the 5pm hour for those that miss the 5pm bulletin.

We'll see about that. It could be that Ten is annoyed about a leak and is trying to cover it up. Wouldn't want to give Seven or Nine a heads up :P

It probably won't happen as soon as most reports suggested, but it sounds like a reasonable proposal.

Still, I'm surprised they would favour news over The Simpsons. Most FTA-only viewers at 6pm either watch the news on Seven or Nine, or The Simpsons on Ten (and hardly anyone watches the ABC or SBS so I'm not including them). If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I know you all like more news, but as I said, I don't believe the average Australian viewer wants that.

That said, maybe Australia will start to go the way of the Americans and have lots of news. Local news here is usually 5:00am to 7:00am, 12:00pm - 12:30pm, 4:00pm to 6:30pm and 11:00pm to 11:30pm - and that is just local news, not national news.

There is such a thing as overkill :)

Hopefully this wont be a similar situation which put channel 10 in receivership in 1989-90

    It's not happening at all.
