  • Ugly Betty premiere takes top honours

    February 19 2007 3:13pm (UTC+8)  -  Article by Kevin

Seven's highly promoted new show Ugly Betty has exceeded expectations with more than 2 million Australians tuning in for the show's premiere last night. Betty was the highest rating show of the night, a result that Seven should be very happy with.

This was followed by the new season premiere of Grey's Anatomy with 1.7 million viewers, the launch of Australia's Got Talent with 1.6 million and Seven News with 1.4 million.

Ugly Betty, well just another example of Seven extracting fantastic ratings week one, look for it to drop and drop badly I say. I reckon 1.6 million next week if it goes under 1.5 million next week then Seven want to get rid of it ASAP. I'm sure 60 minutes will build back upwards and that's bound to help CSI as well.

20 to 1 has to be far and away the most concerning program to Nine but it would be no surprise to me at all to see every Seven show to have a lower audience and every Nine show to have a higher audience on Sunday night in fact Nine should be worried if it doesn't happen.

That'll probably be Seven's best Sunday night share for the year and one of Nine's worst so news really can only get better for Nine but Seven should be happy for the time being.

There was talk last week that it might flop right from the beginning... so it will be interesting to see the results for next Sunday to see if continues. I'm not sure if it can hold the numbers, but I'll wait and see what happens.

Grey's Anatomy should hold up well. There are some excellent episodes coming up later in the season which Seven will put a lot of effort in to promoting. That should deliver some big numbers for them too.

That seems to be the trend in recent years, so it's hard to argue against it.

I was a bit surprised at the results for 60 Minutes... usually that holds up very well. If they can make a recovery over the next couple of weeks, then they have nothing to worry about. If Betty continues with the high numbers though, then Nine would be crazy not to move 60 Minutes. I suspect 60 Minutes would easily win if it went head to head with Australia's Got Talent at 6:30pm. But only time can tell whether that would have to happen.

If Betty is able to hold her numbers, then Nine would be crazy not to move it. There was almost 1 million more people watching Betty than there was watching 60 Minutes. Granted, this may only be a once off and they may recover next week... but if they don't, then that's just crazy.

This has happened before though. From Crikey today...

Next Sunday should be very interesting.

What did everyone think of the show, or didn't many of you watch it?

No way. Nine would never move 60 Minutes. That would be the ultimate sign of defeat for the network.

And Ugly Betty wont hold up those numbers in any case.

I didn't watch it but I'll eat my hat if it does get 2 million again next week.

Didn't watch it. The promos Seven were running over summer really didn't do much to appeal to me.

Ugly Betty is actually a good show. I personally did not like the Pilot very much when I saw it but once you give it a try it really is pretty good. It has a lot of humor and a few mysterious twists. It's doing really well here winning awards and the first season is not even over yet. Ugly Betty, although ugly, is a beautiful show. haha. I could not resist.

I agree with daniel and Firetorch; there are three things certain in this world: 1] the sun will come up 2] we will die and 3] 60 minutes is secure in her place on Sunday nights at 7.30pm. There is a snowballs chance in hell that management will resort to shifting a safe bet just because of some ugly broad from Queens. I can't believe Fugly Betty can generate so much debate.

Raise your hand if you think Ugly Betty is cooler than 60 Minutes? *raises hand*

    Anyone else?

Hmm.. if it helps to win votes; you might like to know Selma Hayek, as you boys would say "that fine latin ass" oggles her goodies.. but my lips are sealed.

Come on fella's.. look at those hands now.

    I'm all shades of funny.
