  • Today Tonight reporter suspended

Today Tonight reporter Nicholas Boot has been stood down following a story that aired on the program on Tuesday night. The story showed an elderly woman chained to her room at an aged care centre, supposedly in protest for being kicked out of her home.

When Government officials visited the nursing home yesterday to investigate the story's claims, they were told that the chains were a stunt and were set up by the Today Tonight crew.

The embarrassing stunt resulted in an apology from Today Tonight host Anna Coren on last night's edition of the program. "Today Tonight reporter Nicholas Boot took a chain with him at Shirley's request to be filmed in her room. Shirley wanted to illustrate the fact she felt like a prisoner. We regret the actions of this journalist and are investigating the matter internally.", Coren explained.

She concluded by apologising to viewers, "We apologise to our viewers if you felt misled".
