The director of Seven News in Perth, Shaun Menegola, has apologised to viewers following a promo that went to air on Friday night. The promo stated that Seven News had an exclusive interview with Ben Cousins from the West Coast Eagles, which was to air during Monday night's bulletin.
Strangely, the promo was nowhere to be seen the following morning. That didn't stop viewers who saw it from wondering what had happened. One such viewer wrote to The West Australian newspaper's "Inside Cover" for an answer.
"Channel 7 ran something on Friday night saying, 'Ben Cousins in his own words, his story'" he wrote.
The state's highest rating news bulletin aired on Monday night with no sign of the "exclusive interview". So what happened? It appears the promo was purely a mistake - but apparently not that of the newsroom.
"Unfortunately, it went to air as a result of a mistake outside the newsroom. I can't say I was amused when I heard about it", Menegola told The West Australian.
He continued to say that there was an indication last week that Ben Cousins may speak to Seven News, and as such, a promo was produced in preparation of the story. It was not meant to go to air however.
"I certainly apologise to the viewers for the blunder", Menegola said.
Opinion
As always, I was paying attention on Friday night when the promo went to air. I was quite surprised about how quickly Seven had managed to get such an interview. As far as I was aware, Ben Cousins had not spoken to anyone since he was suspended from the West Coast Eagles.
As the weekend went on and there was no sign of the promo, it was clear something had happened. No on-air explanation was given to viewers as to what had happened to the story on Monday night. Viewers had to read yesterday's newspaper to find their answer.

Typical response from you, protecting Seven, and attacking me simply because I dont like them.
Seven labels almost everything as an exclusive, the famous example being Ben Cousins walking through the Subiaco carpark last year.
