  • Matthew Newton found guilty of assault

    June 12 2007 12:37pm (UTC+8)  -  Article by Pun

Matthew Newton, son of television legend Bert Newton, has been found guilty of assaulting his former girlfriend, actress Brooke Satchwell. The assault occurred in September last year, when Newton pushed Satchwell to the ground after a verbal argument.

Newton avoided a jail term, instead receiving a 12 month good behaviour bond.

Newton's lawyer Chris Murphy urged the magistrate not to record a conviction against the entertainer, also telling the Downing Centre Local Court that Newton has suffered enough by losing contracts through TV and radio.

Mr Murphy also said Netwon had seen a doctor before the assault, realising he was about to "crack up". He later saw several psychologists from Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred and Rozelle hospitals.

"The defendant has suffered ... the abuse of unfavourable publicity."

"His mere walk to the grocer is even filmed," Mr Murphy said.

Mr Murphy described how Newton's and Satchwell's relationship was strong, and that the last words Newton exchanged with Satchwell was that he loved her.

"This is two strongly committed, passionate people living in a relationship, where one of the people in the relationship is suffering from a deterioration in their situation."
