Seven News boss Peter Meakin has avoided having to spend this weekend behind bars while an appeal against his sentence is prepared. He was given a 14 month periodic detention sentence after being convicted of drink driving and dangerous driving late last month.
Meakin was due to serve his first day at Parramatta's Correctional Centre yesterday, but remains free pending an appeal against his sentence on July 19.
He pleaded guilty to drink driving in January following a police pursuit while he was speeding on his way home. Police later tested his blood alcohol level, where he returned a reading of 0.1 - twice the legal limit.
Meakin has also had his license suspended for 8 years.
The Seven Network has defended Meakin, stating that his job with the Seven Network is secure.
