The Seven Network has flicked the switch on the 1080i high definition (HD) format in Brisbane today. The move comes just a day after the 1080i HD format was enabled in Adelaide and Perth, and four months after it was enabled in Sydney and Melbourne.
Initially the network announced they were undertaking a "one week trial" of the new format, but quickly decided they needed more than a week to conduct their tests. Seven said they would consider the results of the trial in regard to choosing a transmission format and how it will allocate its bandwidth, and make a final decision later in the year.
With the new format being rolled out across all metropolitan markets, it does appear that Seven will be sticking with the 1080i format.
While most have digital fanatics have praised Seven's move, critics are already crying foul over the relatively low amount of bandwidth the network has allocated to the high definition channel. The quality of the broadcast improves as the bandwidth increases.
The amount of bandwidth allocated varies depending on the market, however both the Nine and Ten networks have a higher amount of bandwidth allocated to their high definition channels across the country.
Seven had previously been using the 576p digital format, which it has used since it commenced digital broadcasting in 2001.
