Telstra says it will take television away from our lounge rooms following the launch of Australia's first "on demand" mobile television service - named, unsurprisingly, BigPond TV. The launch of the service was filled with much fanfare, with stars Eric Bana and Richard Wilkins taking part in the event.
BigPond mouthpiece Justin Milne said introducing "true on demand TV" for mobile phones meant viewers can choose when they want to watch their favourite shows. The service will allow viewers to pause a program and return to it at a later time through the use of "bookmarks".
BigPond TV boasts a line up of comedy shows including South Park, Beavis and Butthead, and Spongebob Squarepants. Popular ABC comedy The Chaser's War on Everything is also available.
Telstra has also commissioned some shows made specifically for BigPond TV. This includes "Girl Friday", a 16 part series which follows the antics of a single female office worker.
"We are also giving life to some classic TV by pioneering "mini-sodes", which are the original episodes edited down to just five minutes," Mr Milne said.
As with all Telstra services, BigPond TV is expensive. For $4.95 you can watch one full length episode, or you can choose to pay $9.95 per month for 4 episodes from a single TV series. This cost excludes what Telstra call "browsing charges" however, which start at 8 cents.
