Channel Nine has asked network legend Ray Martin to host a early news show, in a hope to restore the news rating decline. The program would be screened at 5pm, replacing the current 4.30 news hosted by Kelly Connolly.
Nine knows how important lead-ins are for their main 6pm bulletin; Seven has been successful with the strong lead-in from game show Deal or No Deal, fronted by Andrew O'Keefe.
The program would finish at 5.30pm, allowing 30 minutes for a studio switchover for the main 6pm news.
Ray Martin said yesterday from Broken Hill that he was considering the offer.
"I'm not going to go back on daily TV just to fill a spot, I did eight years on A Current Affair and 10 years on Midday, so unless it's something I really want to do, I am not interested."
"The show would have to be something that didn't compete with the 6pm news."
Martin has been recently absent from our screens, fuelling rumours that he had been a cost cutting target of CVC, the new owners of the Nine Network.
