Television legend Ray Martin has decided to walk away from television after almost 30 years. The shock announcement comes just a day after the Nine Network's director of news Garry Linnell also resigned from the network.
With almost 30 years of television, 5 gold Logies, and countless exclusive interviews Martin said that it was simply time to pull up the stumps.
"It's been a wonderful run. I have enjoyed it very much but it's simply just time."
Speculation had be rising over Martin's retirement, after owners of the Nine Network CVC were cutting back on personalities with a large pay cheque.
"I have always loved the place (Channel Nine)," he said. "I will always love it."
With a $2 Million a year pay cheque, it's not hard to understand why Martin loved the network.
Obviously with no hard feelings for the network, Martin continued on to talk about news ratings, particularly against rival network Channel Seven.
"We are not that far behind. It's very close, very close indeed," Martin said.
And as to what Martin will do after television?
"I've been keen to do some writing. Maybe that's what I will do."
