Seven Perth boss Chris Wharton has told Southern Cross Broadcasting that he has spoken to reporter Alison Fan since her mid-week walkout and says she is still contracted to the station for another 18 months, despite a written resignation apparently being accepted by news director Shaun Menegola.
Fan, aged 63, who has been with the station since the early 1970's was last night spotted dining with ABC Perth news director Kim Jordan, he told Inside Cover, "I can say that I'm having dinner with Alison Fan, but that's all I'm going to say," but added that he has, "always been hugely impressed by her work".
IC also reports that Fan had a "spat" several months ago with fellow news reporter Mark Gibson over the phone. The latest fight was believed to have started over questioning by the news director over a report prepared by Alison relating to the trial of Jake Becker for manslaughter. Fan, who is highly regarded in Perth news circles along with co-anchor and close friend Susannah Carr had previously lobbied for Menegola taking the role of news director.
Whilst stating he doesn't comment on internal staff matters, Wharton says, "I agree she (Alison) is a great hand and she is a great asset to Channel Seven
"I spoke to her yesterday and I'll give her a call at the weekend and hope to catch up with her on Monday."
