Veteran WA sport broadcaster and former WAFL player George Grljusich has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. The shock announcement comes just a day after the death of former West Coast Eagles star and media personality Chris Mainwaring.
It has been revealed today that Grljusich, who has been with Perth radio station 6PR for the past 11 years, will not be returning to the station.
In an announcement on Bob Maumill's afternoon program on 6PR this afternoon, 6PR General Manager Declan Kelly said "When I received the call from George on Friday, I was absolutely devastated to hear this news."
"The words 'legend' and 'icon' immediately spring to mind when we think of George Grljusich. George is an outstanding broadcaster, but more importantly and outstanding human being", he said.
In his extraordinary career, Grljusich has broadcast six Olympic Games and ten Commonwealth Games. In his time at 6PR he has broadcast a range of sporting events, with the majority of his work involving AFL and WAFL.
Grljusich, who is 68, commenced broadcasting in 1960. His journalistic career has focussed on radio sports commentary including a long running stay as the main sports announcer at radio station 720 ABC Perth.
"All of us at 6PR are deeply saddened by this news", Mr Kelly said.
