UPDATED 07/11/2007 | Legendary Perth sports broadcaster George Grljusich passed away overnight after a short battle with lung cancer.
Grljusich commenced broadcasting in 1960. His journalistic career has focussed on radio sports commentary including a long running stay as the main sports announcer at radio station 720 ABC Perth. He had been with 6PR for the last 11 years.
During his illustrious career he has broadcast six Olympic Games and ten Commonwealth Games, as well as countless other sporting events.
6PR General Manager Declan Kelly said "The words 'legend' and 'icon' immediately spring to mind when we think of George Grljusich. George was an outstanding broadcaster, but more importantly an outstanding human being. All of us at 6PR are deeply saddened by this news."
George Grljusich was 68.
UPDATE | A private funeral service for Grljusich will be held on Monday at Saint Patrick's Basilica in Fremantle. The service will be broadcast live on 6PR from 10:15am (AWDT).
A public service will be held at 12:00pm noon (AWDT) also on Monday at the Fremantle crematorium.
