  • Sky News goes global for Election 2007

    Sky News have announced that it has reached agreements to broadcast its election night coverage on November 24 live across the world on leading digital television, online, and mobile platforms.

    The ground breaking global distribution agreements will give Sky News' election coverage the widest distribution of any Australian news service.

    Sky News' Election 07 broadcast will be delivered beyond Australia to:

    Asia, India and the Middle East - Live on Channel News Asia to more than 15 million homes and hotels across more than 20 territories stretching from the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia to Northeast Asia. Territories include: India, UAE, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

    UK and Ireland - The coverage through BSkyB will be live on a dedicated full screen channel on Sky News Active across the UK and Ireland – going live into more than 8.6 million homes.

    New Zealand - Live on Sky News New Zealand.

    Online to the world - Live on a dedicated streamed channel on News.com.au.

    Mobile across Australia and NZ - Live on the Sky News mobile service on Vodafone Live, 3 and Foxtel by Mobile on Telstra.

    In flight - Live to Air on Virgin Blue flights across Australia.

    The coverage will be hosted by Sky News Political Editor David Speers from the Sky News Centre in Sydney, and by Helen Dally in the Tally Room in Canberra. Also joining Sky News for their election coverage are politicians and former politicians Kim Beazley, Bob Hawke, John Hewson, Brendan Nelson, Natasha Stott-Despoja, Stephen Conroy and more.

    Angelos Frangopoulos, CEO of Australian News Channel which owns and operates Sky News, said "The world will be able turn to Sky News Australia for live coverage of Election 2007 with the widest distribution of any election night coverage. In particular our coverage through the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Asia will allow Australians abroad to fully participate in the election live as it unfolds."

    Sky News journalists will report live from across the country. The teams include Celina Edmonds, John Gatfield, Kieran Gilbert, Ashleigh Gillon, Leigh Hatcher, David Lipson, John Mangos, Nina May, Nicole Webb, Michael Willesee, and Ahron Young.

    Sky News will also launch a ground breaking seven screen service to cover every aspect of Election 07 Day and Night.

    The seven channels will include "Main News Election 07", "Howard", "Rudd", "Reaction", "Tally Room", plus 3 other channels showing results from individual seats in detail and other news.

    Sky News will also have teams at the John Howard event in Sydney, and the Kevin Rudd event in Brisbane.

    During election coverage you get a much better seat by seat breakdown of results than at any other time-that's why it is interesting. Of course some websites do this seat by seat breakdown pre-election. And of course you can get a full wrap of it once the counting is done on the AEC site but why wait longer than you need to?!

    I think I may be election partying anyway so the coverage won't really matter to me at all, although I'd presume there'd be some coverage there.

    I'll have lots of other people to share my sorrows with then. :P

    And anyway I see an almost ideal outcome in Rudd winning and the coalition maintaining control of the senate, PM Rudd for only 12 months then Costello. The result of the senate is more interesting really than which party wins in the lower house...but coalition in both hopefully. Whatever the case, the count is going to be close and it wouldn't surprise me if the result is unknown for a couple of days as postal votes are always slow to be counted.
