Are the people in these countries really going to give a toss about who wins the election?

I was thinking that too, but either way it's good exposure for Australia (especially if Rudd wins :D :P) :)

    I don't see the point.

Seriously, even if there are Aussies abroad who would actually care enough to watch hours of this stuff despite the different timezones, etc., I don't see the point.

There are people interested in politics all over the world. Most of us will be interested in who replaces Bush in the next US election, and I know was interested in seeing who took over from Blair in the UK recently. That said, I only want to know the result... nothing else really matters.

While it's a good publicity for Australia (hopefully), and it's definitely a great thing for Sky News, I agree that it's hardly worth it for the most part.

I'll be overseas on election day, and the last thing I'll be doing is watching coverage of the election  I'll definitely be interested in the result, but I couldn't give a rats about all the bullshit prior to an announcement.

Exactly.... especially for 6 hours or so of political drivel.

Naturally it will warrant coverage in news bulletins overseas, but 5 mins tops is all it would warrant..... not 6+ hours.

I'm not against it - I think it's a great initiative Sky News are taking and it will be interesting to see how it goes. I'll be in the US on election day, so I won't be able to see any of the Sky News coverage, but I'm sure it will be of a high standard as it always is from them.

That said, I can't see why people overseas would give a rats about our election. They may care about the result, but all the crap in the lead up to an announcement surely wouldn't interest the majority of people overseas?

Yep, I felt it was the best one to use. damo says it was fine for me to use too :)

During election coverage you get a much better seat by seat breakdown of results than at any other time-that's why it is interesting. Of course some websites do this seat by seat breakdown pre-election. And of course you can get a full wrap of it once the counting is done on the AEC site but why wait longer than you need to?!

I think I may be election partying anyway so the coverage won't really matter to me at all, although I'd presume there'd be some coverage there.

It won't be much of a party for you when Rudd wins :P

I'll have lots of other people to share my sorrows with then. :P

And anyway I see an almost ideal outcome in Rudd winning and the coalition maintaining control of the senate, PM Rudd for only 12 months then Costello. The result of the senate is more interesting really than which party wins in the lower house...but coalition in both hopefully. Whatever the case, the count is going to be close and it wouldn't surprise me if the result is unknown for a couple of days as postal votes are always slow to be counted.
